The garden was established by the Focas-Cosmetatos Foundation in 1998 to preserve and display the native flora of the island. The site was formerly an olive grove. Different areas have been created to recreate different native habitats including Phrygana and Maquis.

Review from Tripadvisor:
“We loved the Kefalonia Botanical Gardens. We learnt so much about local flora-their medicinal and culinary uses. We loved the sculptures throughout gardens. We are from Melbourne which has botanical gardens that showcase flora from around the world. What we loved about the Kefalonia Botanica was that it emphasised local flora. Wonderful!”
